Researchers in Siberia are examining the well-preserved remains of a juvenile mammoth discovered in the thawing permafrost. The carcass, estimated to be over 50,000 years old, was uncovered in the Batagaika crater—a massive depression more than 80 meters (260 feet) deep that has been expanding due to climate change.
The mammoth, resembling a small elephant with a trunk, weighs over 110 kilograms (240 pounds). It was carefully retrieved using an improvised stretcher, according to Maxim Cherpasov, the head of the Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory in Yakutsk. Cherpasov noted that the animal was likely just over a year old when it died, though ongoing tests will provide more precise details.
