Study Reveals Human Brain Processing Slower Than Previously Thought

 A new study has revealed that the human brain processes information at a much slower speed than previously assumed. According to researchers at the California Institute of Technology, our brains manage just 10 bits of information per second, despite being bombarded with billions of bits of sensory input every moment.

To put this into perspective, a typical Wi-Fi connection can process around 50 million bits per second. In contrast, while performing tasks like reading, writing, playing video games, or solving a Rubik’s cube, humans are limited to processing information at a rate that scientists describe as “extremely slow.”  

Why Is the Brain So Slow?

The study, published in the journal Neuron, suggests this sluggish processing speed might actually be a necessity—or a result of not needing to be faster. Neurobiologist Markus Meister, a co-author of the study, explained:

“Every moment, we are extracting just 10 bits from the trillions of bits our senses gather. These 10 bits are what allow us to perceive the world and make decisions.”

However, this poses a paradox. With trillions of neurons and vast processing resources, why does the brain focus on just 10 bits per second? Meister and his team hypothesize that the environment in which humans evolved played a role.

“Our ancestors adapted to a world that moved at a slow pace, making it possible to survive with limited processing speed,” the study noted. “In most cases, the 10 bits per second are only required in high-stress situations. For the rest of the time, our surroundings change at a much slower rate.”   

A Need for Deeper Understanding

Despite these findings, the researchers acknowledge that there is much more to uncover. They pointed out that over 85 billion neurons in the human brain, including a third dedicated to advanced thinking in the cortex, remain underutilized.

Moreover, the brain seems to focus on processing one thought at a time, creating what researchers refer to as a “neural bottleneck.”

We don’t yet understand why the brain operates in this way, given its enormous capacity. There’s no clear explanation for what limits us to a single thread of thought at a time,” the study stated.

The researchers call for more investigation into how the brain prioritizes certain information while ignoring the rest. Unlocking this mystery could lead to groundbreaking discoveries about human cognition and how we interact with the world around us.

This research reminds us that, while the human brain is incredibly complex, it still holds countless secrets waiting to be uncovered.
