Chandrayaan-3: India’s Lunar Ambitions Take Flight

India successfully launched its third Moon mission, Chandrayaan-3, on Friday at 2:35 PM IST (09:05 GMT) from the Sriharikota space center. The mission aims to make India the first nation to achieve a soft landing near the Moon’s little-explored south pole. The spacecraft, comprising an orbiter, a lander named Vikram, and a rover called Pragyaan, is expected to land on the lunar surface between August 23-24.

If successful, India will join the elite club of nations that have achieved a soft landing on the Moon, alongside the United States, the former Soviet Union, and China.

Mission Highlights and Goals

Chandrayaan-3 is designed to build on the successes of its predecessors, Chandrayaan-1 and Chandrayaan-2. It carries advanced instruments to study the Moon’s surface, atmosphere, and tectonic activity.

The lander Vikram weighs 1,500kg and houses the 26kg rover Pragyaan, which will roam the lunar surface for approximately 14 Earth days, collecting data and images for analysis. The mission aims to explore the Moon’s south pole, a region believed to hold water in its permanently shadowed areas.

“We Have Learned From Past Challenges”
Chandrayaan-2, launched in 2019, was only partially successful as its lander crashed during touchdown due to a last-minute glitch. Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief Sreedhara Panicker Somanath said lessons from the Chandrayaan-2 crash were studied extensively to avoid past errors.

“We have analyzed data from the Chandrayaan-2 crash and conducted simulations to ensure this mission’s success,” he said.

The Chandrayaan-2 orbiter continues to provide high-resolution images, helping scientists refine the landing strategy for Vikram.

The launch was witnessed by thousands of spectators, who cheered as the rocket ascended. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO, stating, “Chandrayaan-3 has scripted a new chapter in India’s space odyssey. It elevates the dreams and ambitions of every Indian.”

The Moon’s south pole is a challenging region for landing due to its rugged terrain. However, it is scientifically significant as it may contain water ice in shadowed craters, essential for future human habitation and deep space missions.

“Exploring this area could unlock new discoveries, but it carries higher landing risks,” Somanath explained.

“Our ultimate goal is to ensure that when the Moon becomes an extended continent of Earth, India will play an active and significant role,” Annadurai said.
